During the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic barriers to conference participation became more apparent as previously excluded groups took advantage of virtual formats, with dramatic increases in the numbers and the diversity of conference attendees. In this NSF BIO-LEAPS project, we partner with four professional societies (SFS, AFS, TWS, and ESA) to examine trends in organizational diversity of conference attendees prior to, during, and post-pandemic.

We examined and compared nest-site selection between Mississippi kites nesting in urban Lubbock, Texas, and in exurban riparian system in the Texas panhandle. We found that the measured metrics were poor predictors in identifying nest-sites, likely due to either homogeneity in the urban parks were kites nested, or due to a failure to identify variables with stronger predictive power.

This study assessed how connectivity for Lesser Prairie-Chickens on the Southern High Plains was potentially altered by landscape conversion that created a patch network. Our results suggest that there was a 31.5 km coalescence distance of the network (farthest nearest-neighbor distance), with as few as two leks being cutpoints within the network, meaning if these leks were abandoned, birds and associated habitat near the remaining leks may become isolated.

Richardson, E., Patiño, R. 2018. Salinity adaptation in golden alga. Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, College Station, Texas.
|
January 2018
|
Evidence is provided for the occurrence of adaptation to high salinity in golden alga in terms of its ability to compensate for negative impacts on growth rate but not maximum growth potential after prolonged exposure. This information may be useful to assess the risk of dispersal from inland to coastal environments.

Richardson, E, Patiño, R. 2018. Salinity adaptation in the ichthyotoxic golden alga. International Aridlands Conference, Lubbock, Texas August 13-14, 2018.
|
August 2018
|
Results showed that adaptation to high salinity occurs for growth rate but not maximum density (yield) in relatively simple salt solutions, and that relatively complex salt mixtures can compensate for the inhibitory effects of increased salinity. These observations may help better understand the geographic distribution of golden alga at the landscape scale.

We characterized seasonal patterns of dissolved CO2 and alkalinity (bicarbonate) in an impounded, eutrophic, urban stream system with a history of harmful algal blooms. Most lakes had much lower levels of CO2 compared to air through much of the year, suggesting intense carbon fixation by algal communities, and (2) alkalinity (bicarbonate) levels were positively associated with dissolved CO2, suggesting that as algal communities depleted CO2, they turned to bicarbonate as their carbon source.

February 2021
|
Double crested cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax auratus</i>; DCCO) and neotropic cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax brasilanus</i>; NECO) are thought to be expanding their populations across Texas, causing concern for both fish stocking and fisheries management in public waters. Our objectives are to use citizen science data to determine the historic and current distributions of cormorants in Texas, and conducting field surveys to assess current seasonality of presence and association with fish stocking.

|
February 2022
|
Lesser prairie-chickens occupy a range that has a temperature and precipitation gradient from SW to NE. We found strong evidence that lesser prairie-chickens in the southwestern extent of their distribution may be responded to the hotter and drier climate through modification of clutch sizes and egg morphology.

|
April 2014

Results of this study indicate that the functional diversity of fish assemblages in the Big Bend region of the Rio Grande basin has decreased in localities where discharge volume is significantly lower compared to historical reference values. In localities where discharge volume has not changed, functional diversity has also remained stable.

|
The intentional reintroduction of animals to the wild is an important conservation tool for restoring extirpated species to their former ranges, but dispersal following reintroduction can greatly influence the ultimate distribution and complicate the interpretation of results from studies assessing the success of such efforts. Our results indicated that post-release dispersal largely accounted for the distribution and abundance of the endangered Rio Grande Silvery Minnow in the Big Bend region

Populations of gray redhorse are stable across much of its range, but habitat degradation associated with dewatering of streams has lead to the decline of some populations in the western portion of its range. Burbot is a difficult species to effectively manage due to its preference for deep-water habitats and that its spawning and other aspects of its early life history are completed under the ice in winter. This study suggests that while it may be feasible to use passive acoustic monitoring to locate Burbot spawning grounds and identify periods of activity, it does not seem to hold much promise for quantifying spawning activity.

We sampled the ichthyoplankton assemblage in off-channel and main channel habitats of the Lake Livingston RRI and the middle Trinity River to: 1) compare ichthyoplankton abundance and species composition in different habitat types (off-channel RRI, main channel RRI, off-channel riverine, and main channel riverine), and 2) evaluate the influence of lateral connectivity and physicochemical characteristics on abundance and species composition of the ichthyoplankton assemblage in these habitats. Blue Sucker Cycleptus elongatus is a state-listed threatened species in Texas and considered vulnerable throughout its range due to a combination of its habitat requirements and life history traits. Results from this project will inform water management policy decisions affecting the lower Colorado River with implications to instream flows and freshwater inflows to coastal bays and estuaries.

Weather events influence nearly all vital rates for lesser prairie-chickens though their effects vary by ecoregion. Our assessment of the effect of environmental conditions on population trends across the distribution of the species indicates southern populations in the MGP and SOP will have severe declines resulting in extinction for most climate projections unless managers take sufficient conservation efforts.

We used the nest survival model and known fate model in Program MARK to assess the effect size of biologically relevant environmental variables on nest survival for four ecoregions and to assess the effect size on hen survival, respectively. Combined, our results suggest LEPCs respond similarly to environmental conditions across the distribution of the species, but weather impacts to nest survival are exacerbated in the shinnery oak prairies.

We examined impacts of grazing and weather on lesser prairie-chicken lek attendance, survival, and recruitment. Weather appears to affect reproduction efforts more greatly than adult male survival during lekking.
