Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Units Program: Texas
Education, Research and Technical Assistance for Managing Our Natural Resources

The current Texas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is a descendant of one of the original nine units established in 1935 as a result of the efforts by the cartoonist, political satirist, and conservationist J. N. "Ding" Darling. The original Texas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit was based at Texas A&M University in College Station and was tasked with covering the eastern portion of the southwest region of the country, which included Louisiana. It operated under the auspices of the Bureau of Biological Survey with financial or in-kind contributions from ammunition companies, the state resource agencies, and Texas A&M University, and was staffed by a single scientist. The first Texas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit was deactivated in 1954.

The current Texas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, which now also includes aquatic interests and three federal scientist positions, was established in 1988 and began operations in 1989. Full staffing of the unit was first achieved in 1991. Permanent staff of the Unit at present also includes a university administrative assistant. A team of graduate students, undergraduate technicians and postdoctoral and research associates work with Unit scientists to carry out Unit research and operations.
