Results of hemocytometry suggested the presence of golden alga in a spring-fed pond within Big Bend National Park. We examined the spatial scale of similarity for fish assemblages in the highly modified Rio Grande basin in the Chihuahuan desert of West Texas using a historical data set spanning approximately 30 years of time. Results indicated that homogenization and differentiation occurred, but these patterns depended on the spatial resolution of comparison.

River regulation and degraded riparian habitat can diminish resource heterogeneity that supports riverine food-webs of prairie fishes, yet the food-web ecology of many prairie stream fishes is not well understood. Here, we characterize the diets of four species of greatest conservation need, in the Red River. Results from this study will provide fundamental ecological knowledge about spatial and temporal variation in diet habits.

We present results evaluating the effect of variability of seasonality parameters on lesser prairie-chicken home range sizes, nest habitat selection, and timing of nesting events. We also discuss the use of time series analysis of NDVI data as an efficient methodology for researchers and land managers to quantify spatio-temporal patterns in green vegetation and better manage wildlife populations.

We examined and compared nest-site selection between Mississippi kites nesting in urban Lubbock, Texas, and in exurban riparian system in the Texas panhandle. We found that the measured metrics were poor predictors in identifying nest-sites, likely due to either homogeneity in the urban parks were kites nested, or due to a failure to identify variables with stronger predictive power.

The results of this study revealed no evidence of reproductive impairment in fathead minnow exposed to wastewater effluents produced by Clark County Water Reclamation District's Central Plant after short-term and multigenerational exposures. We calculated daily movement distances, averaged movement distances among individuals, and estimated utilization distributions with Brownian Bridge Movement Models for lesser prairie-chickens with GPS transmitters. Based on preliminary results, daily movements and space use increased during the summer season and correspond to the end of intense lekking activity and male dispersal.

We characterized seasonal patterns of dissolved CO2 and alkalinity (bicarbonate) in an impounded, eutrophic, urban stream system with a history of harmful algal blooms. Most lakes had much lower levels of CO2 compared to air through much of the year, suggesting intense carbon fixation by algal communities, and (2) alkalinity (bicarbonate) levels were positively associated with dissolved CO2, suggesting that as algal communities depleted CO2, they turned to bicarbonate as their carbon source.

This study of blue suckers determined that fin rays can provide an adequate alternative to otoliths for age estimation when otoliths are not a feasible option. The study also showed that (1) the thermal limits for swimming performance are much broader than those reported for spawning migration and spawning and (2) current speed seemed to influence behavior and therefore could affect the fish's accessibility to spawning habitat.

Eagle - wind energy conflict is a substantial issue due to eagles experiencing mortality at energy centers. We have found evidence that most locations for GPS tagged eagles in the Southwest United States occured within 100m of mesa rims; this provided important information for possible buffering of areas from turbine placement.

We used a full factorial experimental design to assess the effects of temperature, total dissolved solids, and total suspended solids on the buoyancy and developmental rate of ARS eggs and larva. Our findings will aid in identifying of areas that can support successful reproduction in pelagic-spawning cyprinids, such as ARS, and provides critical data for developing models predicting the effect of further anthropogenic disturbances.

Our findings will aid in identifying of areas that can support successful reproduction in pelagic-spawning cyprinids, such as ARS, and provides critical data for developing models predicting the effect of further anthropogenic disturbances.

Double crested cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax auratus</i>; DCCO) and neotropic cormorants (<i>Phalacrocorax brasilanus</i>; NECO) are thought to be expanding their populations across Texas, causing concern for both fish stocking and fisheries management in public waters. Our objectives are to use citizen science data to determine the historic and current distributions of cormorants in Texas, and conducting field surveys to assess current seasonality of presence and association with fish stocking.

Lesser prairie-chickens occupy a range that has a temperature and precipitation gradient from SW to NE. We found strong evidence that lesser prairie-chickens in the southwestern extent of their distribution may be responded to the hotter and drier climate through modification of clutch sizes and egg morphology.

Despite high conservation concern, there have not been any studies focusing on dispersal patterns, habitat use, survival rates, and home range of golden eagles in the Southern Great Plains and Trans Pecos regions. We attached PTTs to 20 golden eagle nestlings in the Southern Great Plains and Trans Pecos regions in 2015 and 2016 to determine survival rates, dispersal and movement patterns within the first two years post-fledging, as well as seasonal and annual home range size and habitat use.

We assessed habitat selection of lesser prairie-chickens within CRP fields in Texas using selection ratios after quantifying the amount and arrangement of different cover types across the study area. Based on our results, CRP fields were habitat for lesser prairie-chickens in our study area, and as such, beneficial to the species on the High Plains of Texas.

Each autumn, Swainson’s hawks migrate en masse from North America to their wintering grounds in Argentina, and returns in the spring for a round trip distance that may exceed 22,000 km. We are using data from GPS tagged Swainson’s hawks to construct Brownian Bridge movement models to determine the potential for Swainson’s hawks to encounter, and potentially be at risk of, wind energy centers along their international migration route.

Preliminary analyses indicate support for our hypothesis that abiotic conditions appear to exert strong influences on lesser prairie-chicken nest survival in the southwestern region, but reduced influences in the northern and northeastern extents of their distribution.

We evaluated brood-site selection and brood survival of lesser prairie-chickens among control sites and four combinations of treatments with tebuthiuron (0.60kg/ha) and a short-duration, rotational-grazing system used to restore sand shinnery oak prairies. Our results indicated starvation and thermal cover are two proximate mechanisms limiting brood recruitment on the Southern High Plains.

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir by volume in the U.S. and serves as critical habitat for several federal endangered species and supports recreational fisheries. This study was conducted in 2007 and 2010 to gather baseline information about synthetic organic compounds and fish health and to offer insights into the Lake Mead ecosystem and other reservoirs experiencing similar environmental climate changes (e.g., drought).

Several hypothesis have been posited to explain the addition of green leafy material to nests by raptors, but only one, the reduction of ectoparasites, has gained any circumstantial evidence. To assess the role of environmental conditions on Lesser Prairie-Chicken nest and female survival, we analyzed demographic data in 2007-2012 in the sand shinnery oak (SSOP) from 1997-2002 in the sand sagebrush prairie (SSBP) ecoregions. We describe the mating system of southern flounder in captivity using video analysis and molecular markers. Our results provide insights on the potential impacts of skewed sex ratios on the reproductive behavior and success of southern flounder and also allow for the refinement of production techniques for the species.

We used a low-cost side scan sonar system to map and classify substrate and other instream habitat features, then established sampling stations stratified by meso- and microhabitat classes which were sampled seasonally. Our findings will help provide data on the habitat use patterns of a fish assemblage in a relatively undisturbed system and could potentially help prioritize future restoration efforts for other streams in the region

We identified relationships between anthropogenic feature densities and lesser prairie-chicken lek attendance. Preliminary results suggest increasing anthropogenic feature densities negatively influenced male lek attendance, and we speculate this was likely due to decreased quality in available nesting habitat around leks for hens.

Habitat management is important for conservation of quail, but predator-specific escape cover use is poorly understood. To better understand this habitat requirement, I collected escape cover use data for Gambel’s (<i>Callipepla gambelii</i>), scaled (<i>Callipepla</i> <i>squamata</i>), and Montezuma (<i>Cyrtonyx montezumae</i>) quail pursued by trained falconry hawks during 171 hunting trials in winter 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 in Arizona and New Mexico.

This presentation compares differential survival and movement patterns of juvenile Golden Eagle in the 1) southern plains and 2) trans pecos regions. These are new data for the species in an often overlooked region of its distribution.

Stocking of hatchery-propagated Guadalupe Bass is used as a management tool to combat introgression with non-native Smallmouth Bass. Our results suggest that hatchery-propagated individuals disperse from release sites and are integrated into the resident population.

Populations of gray redhorse are stable across much of its range, but habitat degradation associated with dewatering of streams has lead to the decline of some populations in the western portion of its range. These results will aid in predicting responses of native fishes to modifications to streamflow as demand on water resources continues to grow in the region.

We evaluated age structure and growth of a Gray Redhorse population in the South Llano River, Texas and evaluated the relationship between residuals from a Von Bertalanffy growth curve and annual streamflow parameters. Correlations between streamflow characteristics and residuals from the von Bertalanffy growth curve were weak and indicate little influence of streamflow variation on Gray Redhorse growth.

We used data loggers to assess correlation between microclimate and nest survival of lesser prairie-chickens. Microclimate received more model support for nest survival compared to visual obstruction, and our results suggest conservation of the species would benefit from the identification of thermal landscapes that promote cooler, more humid conditions during nest incubation.

Burbot is a difficult species to effectively manage due to its preference for deep-water habitats and that its spawning and other aspects of its early life history are completed under the ice in winter. This study suggests that while it may be feasible to use passive acoustic monitoring to locate Burbot spawning grounds and identify periods of activity, it does not seem to hold much promise for quantifying spawning activity.

Weather events influence nearly all vital rates for lesser prairie-chickens though their effects vary by ecoregion. Our assessment of the effect of environmental conditions on population trends across the distribution of the species indicates southern populations in the MGP and SOP will have severe declines resulting in extinction for most climate projections unless managers take sufficient conservation efforts.

We used the nest survival model and known fate model in Program MARK to assess the effect size of biologically relevant environmental variables on nest survival for four ecoregions and to assess the effect size on hen survival, respectively. Combined, our results suggest LEPCs respond similarly to environmental conditions across the distribution of the species, but weather impacts to nest survival are exacerbated in the shinnery oak prairies.
