Golden-winged warblers are a species of special management concern, primarily due to dramatic population declines in the eastern portion of their breeding range, in spite of high nest success. Relatively little is known about their migration routes and wintering areas. We present information derived from geolocators that elucidates migration ecology and spatial relations of wintering golden-winged warblers from across their breeding distribution.

Golden-winged warblers are a species of conservation concern, having experienced a >95% decline in population size in the Appalachian Mountain portion of their breeding distribution. As with most Neotropical migrant songbirds, little is know about their migration routes and nonbreeding season distribution. We used light-level geolocators to evaluate year-round movements and wintering affiliations of golden-winged warblers from across their breeding distribution.,

Golden-winged and blue-winged warblers comprise a species complex (perhaps a single polymorphic species) of high conservation concern. Studies of their reproductive ecology suggest that in most places, reproductive success is high, although population size in a portion of their distribution is declining. We used geolocators to evaluate nonbreeding season distribution and related population trends to nonbreeding season distribution and landscape conditions.

Vermivora warblers (golden-winged and blue-winged warblers and their hybrids) are species of special conservation concern, based largely on dramatic population declines in the eastern portion of their breeding distribution. We marked Vermivora warblers across their breeding distribution to elucidate patterns of migratory connectivity, identify population-specific wintering distributions, and better understand migration timing and routes.

Variable trends among breeding populations of Neotropical-Nearctic migrant songbirds are thought to be primarily related to factors on the breeding grounds, where conservation efforts have largely been focused. We evaluated migratory connectivity in Vermivora warblers (Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers and their hybrids) across their breeding distribution and documented strong migratory connectivity with populations experiencing declines linked to similar wintering areas, suggesting that

How Neotropical-Nearctic migratory songbirds traverse their migratory routes is not well understood, and there are no assessments regarding migration by individual from across a species' breeding distribution. The neonicotinoid imidacloprid is widely applied in natural systems to manage the spread and impacts of nonnative forest insects, such as hemlock woolly adelgid (<i>Adelges tsugae</i>). While application of this pesticide is an effective management tool for native tree preservation, negative effects can occur on non-target vertebrates.

Golden-winged warblers are a species of high conservation concern, due to dramatic declines in breeding populations in some portions of their range. We used light-level geolocators to evaluate migration and wintering ecology to better understand structure on their wintering grounds and potential population-level effects of factors encountered during migration and winter.

Golden-winged warblers are a species of conservation concern, having experienced a >95% decline in population size in the Appalachian Mountain portion of their breeding distribution. As with most Neotropical migrant songbirds, little is know about their migration routes and nonbreeding season distribution. We used light-level geolocators to evaluate year-round movements and wintering affiliations of golden-winged warblers from across their breeding distribution.

American eels migrate upstream in river systems along the Atlantic coast, and eel ladders have been installed on dams in some rivers to aid upstream migration. This study documents the timing of upstream migration and eel ladder use within the lower Shenandoah RIver, and provides aquatic resource agencies with valuable data for management of American Eels.

July 2023
|
Some Brown Bullhead <i>Ameiurus nebulosus</i> individuals from Lake Memphremagog located in Vermont and Quebec develop visible raised and non-raised melanistic lesions on their skin which was first reported by anglers in 2012. Currently, the etiology of the lesions is unknown, thus, our goal is to determine potential risk factors associated with the melanomas.
