Advanced electronics and new methodologies are giving fisheries managers a much greater understanding of fish biology and are providing means for studying and managing fish populations that were unheard of 10 years ago. A brief overview of some of these new tools, their capabilities, and how they are currently being used in fisheries studies provides additional options for 21st century fisheries managers.

Recently, examination of deoxyribiose nucleic acids in water samples (environmental DNA or eDNA) has shown promise for identifying fish species present in water bodies. In water, eDNA is the result of bodily secretions such as mucus, gametes, and feces. We are investigating whether eDNA can be effective for estimating fish species biomass and relative abundance in waterbodies.

Standardization of methods and processes for freshwater fish population and community monitoring and assessment allow for better communication among scientists, for large scale and long-term studies, and for better understanding of multiple factors affecting freshwater fish populations. As we move towards a 2nd edition of the book, standard methods will be developed for environments not included in the 1st edition (i.e., desert springs, karst lakes, and others) and novel methods (i.e., light traps, eDNA) will be standardized, increasing possibilities for their global implementation.

|
Conserving the natural flow regime of streams is critical to safeguarding the diversity of native fish species. The desert Southwest is home the highest concentration of endangered fish species in the United States, and many of these species have adapted to the variation, magnitude, frequency, timing, and rate of change of flow regimes unique to this ecosystem. Determining the relationship between the characteristics of different flows and fish population dynamics is important for managing southwest rivers for the benefit of native species. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between fish populations and hydrological data over time using a 30-year fish sampling dataset from the Arizona Game and Fish Department and USGS hydrology data from stream gages in four Arizona streams. Additionally, we used USGS StreamStats to evaluate spatial variation in populations within each stream in relation to streamflow based on this historical dataset and field data from Summer 2017. USGS Streamstats generates estimates of 2-year, 10-year, and 100-year magnitude flooding events using regional regression models. These metrics were analyzed in relation to spatial variation in fish populations. This study provides critical information to managers on how flow dynamics interact with different fish species in arid-land rivers.

S. A. Bonar, D. Bunnell 2015. Assessment of Inland Fish Populations and Fisheries: The Foundation for Sustainable Management. 145th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society, Portland, Oregon, August 16-20, 2015.
|
August 2015
|
Biological and production assessments are essential for science-based sustainable fisheries management and can further be used to demonstrate the full value (economic and otherwise) of inland fisheries resources. A path forward is suggested in which biological assessment generates some of the critical information needed by fisheries managers to make effective decisions that benefit the resource and stakeholders.

The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA), and AFS are supporting development of a second edition of the book to move AFS closer towards having development of standard sampling methods as an ongoing activity of the society. Goals for the second edition include querying fish management agencies across North America as to areas of improvement, but otherwise retaining methods as similar as possible to preserve standardization; adding additional requested chapters and expanding participants; and revising data averages and developing a process for updating methods in the future.

August 2016
|
Many western North American streams and rivers are known for their exceptionally variable hydrographs. Periodic flood events clean and redistribute substrate, provide nutrients, and flush out nonnative species that have not evolved under such variable hydrological regimes. Regulating the flow of Western rivers has often led to changes in species composition favoring nonnative species. Many nonnative faunas are more adapted to slower, pooling waters. Here I provide specific examples from the western United States on the effects of flow alterations on native/nonnative fish species interactions. Modelling of potential effects and case histories of changes in aquatic communities following flow alternations have been important in litigation to conserve natural stream flow effects for native species. A working knowledge of native/nonnative fish interactions, and their response to stream flow alteration is important for fisheries biologists and managers.
