Flat-tailed horned lizard populations are declining and are proposed for listing under the ESA. It is unresolved whether the Arizona population(s) represent a unique gene pool isolated from those of California and Mexico. We will characterize the extent of genetic variation and uniqueness of Phrynosoma mcallii, at a finer scale than previous studies, within and among the Arizona, California, and Mexico populations. Partners in this study include Arizona Game and Fish Department, the US Army, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service Results of this study will be used in future management decisions by Arizona Game and Fish Department.
