Unit scientists offer a variety of fish and wildlife technical assistance to state and federal cooperators and private organizations. This assistance has included workshops on fish and wildlife monitoring techniques, conservation genetics and techniques for working with the public on fish and wildlife issues; assistance and advice with agency threatened and endangered species recovery groups; technical consultation on fish and wildlife issues for scientists and managers in other countries; and review of data and reports from management agencies and universities.

Technical advise on various aspects of genetic techniques from protocols for DNA extraction from hair, bone, saliva, and feather samples to recommending primers for species identification, sex determination (birds, bears, and felids) and microsatellite amplification (bears and felids). Provided periodic expert opinion to the Yuma Clapper Rail Advisory Team, a multi-agency group organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The team makes recommendations regarding management and recovery of the federally-endangered Yuma Clapper Rail and coordinates activities among all federal, state, and tribal governments.

Provided expert opinions to biologists in US Bureau of Land Management and Arizona Game and Fish Department regarding efforts to revegetate a large burned area along the Colorado River to help restore habitat for the state-endangered California Black Rail. The 2 agencies were developing a management plan for the revegetation effort and the scientist exchanged many emails and had numerous phone conversations with them to advise them with their revegetation plan.

Beginning in the summer of 2023 I was the faculty mentor for an undergraduate Dorris Duke Scholar in the University of Arizona's School of Environment and Natural Resources. I worked with the scholar and one of my graduate students to design a research question and study design that the scholar could investigate and worked with the scholar to collect, analyze, and present the data.

Beginning in March 2022, I began supervising a PhD student, Rollie Grinder, from the University of Arizona's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department as part of an internship required by EEB. I was specifically sought out for my expertise in statistical modeling. I have worked with Ms. Grinder to complete an analysis of amphibian occupancy data and we are preparing a manuscript for publication.

The large, multi-agency cooperative research on the effects of prescribed fire on endangered rails for which the scientist is the team leader was the front-page story for the Yuma Daily Sun on 8 March 2004. The newspaper had a reporter and a photographer come out in the field for one of the prescribed burns associated with the project and interviewed the scientist as well as other members of the team from USFWS, BLM. The Tri-City Herald (large newspaper serving eastern Washington) produced and ran a front-page story explaining how the scientist's research on Burrowing Owls in eastern Washington is helping state and federal land management agencies in the region better manage their lands to prevent future declines of this species of management concern (Officials to study burrowing owls: scientists surprised some birds stayed in area during the winter).
