Managers of the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge are currently conducting hardwood management control to generate high quality foraging habitat for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers on two management units. Response by open pine-dependent avian species that are not the focus of this management is of interest to refuge managers. Habitat management on wildlife conservation areas, such as units of the National Wildlife Refuge System, is often oriented at single-species response. This research will help inform quantify carry-over benefits, if any, to non-target avian species in mixed pine-hardwood systems. This research was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the University of Georgia, and USGS. This research will help the Refuge plan sampling strategies and provide analytical models for the evaluation of habitat management effects on non-target avian species.
