Education, Research and Technical Assistance for Managing Our Natural Resources

After spending the first 18 years of my life bird hunting and fishing in the northland prairies and forests of Minnesota (going to school too), I moved west and received my B.S. in Arizona, M.S. in Nevada, and Ph.D. in Oregon—the latter while studying elk and deer on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. Ever on the road in those days, my family and I moved cross-country to Maine where I taught in the Wildlife Department at the University of Maine–Orono. In 1985, we moved to Stillwater America, as they say, where I joined the Oklahoma Unit as an Assistant Unit Leader, becoming Unit Leader in 1989. . My research—more accurately that of my graduate students—has varied over the past 30 years and largely responsive to the needs of the Oklahoma Unit's Cooperators. Following my early work on ungulates, my students and I have worked on white-tailed deer, elk, and bison in Oklahoma, and recently, syntheses for Asian large mammals, particularly of the Tibetan Plateau and habitat fragmentation in south Texas. Many of the students I have had the pleasure of advising have worked various endangered species (e.g., Ozark big-eared bats, gray bats, and least terns) and those species of conservation concern (e.g., mountain plover, lesser prairie chickens), with an eye toward their future challenges and recovery needs. .
