Conduced field test on whether resource selection of an inland American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) population is influenced by size-based dominance. Our results suggest body size–based despotism does not seem to be a factor in constraining or promoting resource use, indicating dominance hierarchy in wild alligator populations may be regulated by density-dependent mechanisms.

Hierarchical models incorporate information from a suite of common and rare species to inform a more complete understanding of distributions for bird communities, or guilds. This method has largely been used in occupancy estimation, however, here we illustrate the usefulness of this approach in generating estimates of daily survival rates for songbird nests.

February 2017
Largemouth bass are sought by millions of anglers who either practice live release voluntarily or to comply with regulations, yet the independent effects of water temperature, live well dissolved oxygen, and angling stress on survival have not been measured. This controlled laboratory study measured the effect of ambient temperature (17, 21, 25, 29 and 33 °C) and simulated angling (1 and 3 min forced swimming) on 5-day survival of caught-and-released Largemouth bass >300 mm and the survival of

Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides are a frequently sought after fish species by recreational anglers in the United States, and information about the survival of angler- and tournament-caught Largemouth Bass is critical to their effective management. We measured the survival of Largemouth Bass subjected to simulated angling followed by immediate release and simulated tournament conditions across a range of temperatures at which recreational fishing occurs.

The mortality of tournament-caught largemouth bass varies widely and is positively related to water temperature; the mortality of caught-and-immediately-released largemouth bass is considered to be low, but temperature effects have not been considered. This study measures the survival of immediately released and tournament-treated largemouth bass across a range of temperatures under controlled conditions.

February 2017
Largemouth Bass provide important fisheries used by a large number of anglers, many of whom practice live release or fish in live-release tournaments. This study measures the physiological effects of cumulative stressors associated with recreational- and tournament-fishing stressor that can be used to assess the effects of fishing on Largemouth Bass populations and to develop fish handling prodecures to minimize adverse effects on Largemouth Bass populations.

February 2016
Largemouth bass can be intensively reared on prepared diets, but studies have demonstrated that these fish are physiologically and behaviorally inferior to wild fish. We determined that Largemouth Bass f are physiologically similar to wild fish after feeding live forage for 4 to 8 weeks.

June 2016
Largemouth Bass reared on prepared are advantageous for research and stocking larger fish, but these fish may have characteristics that make them less tolerant of stress and have lower survival in the wild. This research demonstrates the physiological stress responses of Largemouth Bass reared on prepared feed and "naturalized" to live forage.
