Biography

As leader of the Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit my primary responsibilities are research, graduate education, technical support, and assistance to fish and wildlife managers that address the priorities of the U.S. Geological Survey and Unit Cooperator. I serve as principal investigator, build and lead teams, and advise graduate-student research focusing on using spatial data to understand population ecology and habitat selection for species and ecosystem conservation. I collaborate with academic faculty both internal and external to Iowa State University, other Cooperative Research Unit scientists, state and federal agency scientists, and natural resource managers. Research funding comes from a variety of sources, including internal U.S. Geological Survey funds, federal and state agencies, and non-governmental organizations. Research projects in which I am involved are cooperative and generally supported by a variety of funding sources and in-kind contributions. My goal is to facilitate graduate student participation while insuring that projects provide practical and useful results. As a research scientist, I have authored or co-authored 90 publications and mentored graduate students from four different universities. In my role as a faculty member of the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management I teach 1 graduate-level class each year.
