Biography

Dr. Diefenbach received graduate degrees from the University of Maine and University of Georgia and he joined the Pennsylvania Unit in 1999 and has been unit leader since 2010. Dr. Diefenbach has expertise in developing statistical models for population monitoring of a wide range of wildlife species, including grassland songbirds, elk, black bear, and white-tailed deer. Since 2013 he has been conducting a long-term study on the effects of deer herbivory, soil conditions, and competing vegetation on forest understory plant communities that is integrated into the deer management programs of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Bureau of Forestry. He also continues to monitor the bobcat population he reintroduced to Cumberland Island National Seashore in 1989. He has a strong interest in linking research with management decision making and has worked with state agencies in developing decision tools for deer and turkey harvest management. Dr. Diefenbach teachs a graduate course in wildlife population estimation and modeling.
