Colloquial Name: Cumberland Sandstone Glade & Barrens

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: This vegetation, dominated by perennial grasslands, occurs in association with open woodlands of sandstone outcrops and surrounding thin soil areas. These stands are found on the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain in Alabama and northeastern Georgia. The dominant herbaceous plants include Bigelowia nuttallii, Danthonia sericea, Liatris microcephala, and Schizachyrium scoparium. Scattered trees include Pinus echinata, Pinus virginiana, Quercus falcata, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus stellata. Shrubs may include Chionanthus virginicus, Kalmia latifolia, and Vaccinium arboreum.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Includes perennial grasslands and open woodlands associated with sandstone outcrops and surrounding thin soil areas. The dominant herbaceous plants include Bigelowia nuttallii, Danthonia sericea, Liatris microcephala, and Schizachyrium scoparium. There may be scattered trees, such as Pinus echinata, Pinus virginiana, Quercus falcata, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus stellata.

Physiognomy and Structure: Graminoids dominate stands of this alliance with scattered trees and shrubs. Schizachyrium scoparium dominates these grasslands which have scattered broad-leaved deciduous trees, or mixed broad-leaved deciduous trees with needle-leaved evergreen trees such as Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana. The herbaceous flora is diverse and varies considerably seasonally; spring and autumn are periods of peak flowering.

Floristics: The dominant herbaceous plants include Bigelowia nuttallii, Danthonia sericea, Liatris microcephala, and Schizachyrium scoparium. Scattered trees include Pinus echinata, Pinus virginiana, Quercus falcata, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus stellata. Shrubs may include Chionanthus virginicus, Kalmia latifolia, and Vaccinium arboreum.

Dynamics:  Drought (in these thin soil areas) is important in keeping these areas open with few trees.

Environmental Description:  This vegetation is associated with sandstone outcrops and surrounding thin soil areas.

Geographic Range: This alliance is found on the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain in Alabama and northeastern Georgia. This vegetation may also occur in western Virginia.
