Type Concept Sentence: This shrubland alliance is dominated by Vaccinium ovalifolium, Vaccinium cespitosum, and/or Vaccinium uliginosum on steep exposed slopes in southwestern Alaska, the Alaska peninsula, Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Oval-leaf Blueberry - Dwarf Bilberry - Bog Blueberry Shrubland Alliance

Colloquial Name: Southern Alaskan Blueberry Shrubland

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: These shrublands are dominated Vaccinium ovalifolium, Vaccinium cespitosum, and/or Vaccinium uliginosum. These shrublands and thickets occur on steep exposed slopes and are dominated by a mix of alder and willows. These slopes are dynamic with landslides such that trees cannot become established.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Shrublands dominated by Vaccinium ovalifolium, Vaccinium cespitosum, and/or Vaccinium uliginosum where any of these three species may be dominant.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: These are a type of low shrub (II.C.) within the Alaska Vegetation Classification (Viereck et al. 1992), but more detailed information on floristic and environmental components is needed.
