A3247 Prosopis glandulosa Scrub Woodland Alliance

Type Concept Sentence: This scrub woodland alliance ranges from western Oklahoma into western and central Texas and is characterized by a scattered canopy of Prosopis glandulosa over native grasses and forbs.

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Honey Mesquite Scrub Woodland Alliance

Colloquial Name: Honey Mesquite Scrub Woodland

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: This scrub woodland alliance ranges from western Oklahoma into western and central Texas and is characterized by a scattered canopy of Prosopis glandulosa over native grasses and forbs. It represents natural stands with an open canopy dominated or codominated by Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa. Associated species can include Ziziphus obtusifolia, Quercus fusiformis, Sideroxylon lanuginosum, Nassella leucotricha, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua gracilis, Bouteloua hirsuta, Bouteloua dactyloides, and Schizachyrium scoparium. This alliance may occur on a variety of substrates including gypsum hills, sandy plains, and valleys.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Prosopis glandulosa scrub woodlands over mixedgrass prairie species.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This alliance is poorly documented. There may be associations currently classified elsewhere that belong here, there may be undescribed associations, and/or this alliance may need to be merged with ~Prosopis glandulosa Shortgrass Prairie Ruderal Scrub Alliance (A3952)$$. Classification of this alliance is complicated because it may be difficult to distinguish native vegetation from compositionally and structurally similar ruderal vegetation. This alliance as described does not include vegetation characterized by Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa occurring in southern Texas.

Physiognomy and Structure: This alliance is a short-statured, open-canopied woodland or shrubland.

Floristics: The open canopy is dominated or codominated by Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa. Associated species can include Ziziphus obtusifolia, Quercus fusiformis, Sideroxylon lanuginosum, Nassella leucotricha, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua gracilis, Bouteloua hirsuta, Bouteloua dactyloides (= Buchloe dactyloides), and Schizachyrium scoparium.

Dynamics:  More information is needed to better describe the dynamics for this vegetation. Fire, climate, native grazing and edaphic factors all likely played a role historically in maintaining this vegetation. Loss of these natural processes may have resulted in a shift toward a more closed canopy, increase in successional woody species, and decrease in native grass cover.

Environmental Description:  This alliance may occur on a variety of substrates including gypsum hills, sandy plains, and valleys.

Geographic Range: This scrub woodland alliance ranges from western Oklahoma into western and central Texas.
