It occurs at spatial scales ranging from narrow bands to flats in excess of 500 ha; it often occurs either just below Iva frutescens or Baccharis halimifolia, or just above Juncus roemerianus or Spartina alterniflora. Other characteristic species include Spartina patens, Iva frutescens ssp. frutescens, Iva frutescens ssp. oraria, and Limonium carolinianum. In Texas, the composition of this low-diversity, irregularly tidally flooded shrubland is variable and can include Batis maritima, Limonium carolinianum, Lycium carolinianum var. quadrifidum, Monanthochloe littoralis, Rayjacksonia phyllocephala, Sarcocornia perennis, Spartina spartinae, and Sporobolus virginicus. This alliance also houses a single undescribed provisional association dominated by Borrichia arborescens in Florida. This alliance ranges from North Carolina south to Texas.
