Colloquial Name: No Data Available
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This association is currently described only from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio. This upland disturbed shrubland occurs on a variety of habitats. Slopes may be flat to moderate and of any aspect. Soils are typically moderate to fine (not sands). These sites do not flood regularly but may be wet-mesic. This upland shrubland occupies disturbed sites where shrubs have come to dominate. The shrub cover ranges from open to closed (25-100%) and is often >2 m tall. Some stands are so thick as to be nearly impenetrable. Most dominants are exotic. Rosa multiflora, Elaeagnus umbellata, and Crataegus spp. are the most common. Cornus drummondii, Malus spp., Rubus spp., and other shrubs typical of old fields can also be present. The herbaceous stratum varies inversely with the shrub stratum with closed shrub canopies having sparse herbaceous understories and vice-versa. Herbaceous species are variable but are typical of disturbed sites. Anthoxanthum odoratum, Leucanthemum vulgare, Daucus carota, Solidago spp., Poa pratensis, and several other species are common.
