Type Concept: This New Mexico locust shrubland association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It occurs from 2402 to 2698 m (7881-8852 feet) elevation in areas that have recently experienced high-severity, stand-replacing fires. It occurs on plateaus, on flat or very gentle slopes (typically 3°), across all aspects, and often in silty loam soils. Tree cover is completely lacking in this association, as extant conifers (mostly Pinus ponderosa) have experienced full mortality from fire. Robinia neomexicana can occur as either a tall or short shrub depending upon duration since the last fire. Mahonia repens is common at low cover. While infrequent, stands can sometimes have significant cover of Ceanothus fendleri. Graminoid composition varies significantly among stands. More mesic sites can have dense covers of Poa pratensis and Poa fendleriana, while drier sites have moderate amounts of Bromus tectorum. Forb cover is variable as well; fire-adapted Gayophytum diffusum, Erigeron divergens, Solidago velutina, and Chenopodium sp. are common components of the understory. This community type is associated with very high-intensity stand-replacing fires, and typically occurs within a larger matrix of unburned Pinus ponderosa woodlands.
