Type Concept: This is a major association of the Oscura and San Andres mountains in New Mexico. It is also reported from Oklahoma and Colorado. This association typically occurs on the cool aspects of steep to very steep scarp slopes at elevations of 1700 to 2150 m (5500-7000 feet). This open woodland has a shrubby undergrowth dominated by Cercocarpus montanus. While Juniperus monosperma is the dominant tree, Pinus edulis is also common. Among the many shrubs that can be present (29 species), Yucca baccata, Rhus trilobata, Opuntia phaeacantha, Ephedra aspera, and Nolina microcarpa are the most constant and well-represented to abundant associates. Among the grasses, Bouteloua curtipendula and Aristida purpurea are the most common, but grass cover is generally low. Forb species richness is moderate (27 species), but overall cover is low. Eriogonum jamesii and Lesquerella fendleri are the most constant species.

Classification Comments: These stands are probably mid-successional following fire (Cercocarpus montanus is a fire indicator). In the absence of further fire, and as Cercocarpus montanus dies off, mature stands may be replaced by typical slope juniper/grass types, including ~Juniperus monosperma / Bouteloua curtipendula Open Woodland (CEGL000708)$$ and ~Juniperus monosperma / Hesperostipa neomexicana Open Woodland (CEGL000722)$$, or shrubbier types, such as Oneseed Juniper/Banana Yucca PA (Muldavin et al. 2000b) and ~Juniperus monosperma / Quercus turbinella Woodland (CEGL000720)$$. On cooler sites, pinyon woodlands may prevail. This type is currently known only from White Sands Missile Range, but may occur in other surrounding mountain ranges.
