Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: European Beachgrass - Sandcarpet Ruderal Grassland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This herbaceous association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found on undulating southeast- to north-facing slopes of sand dunes. Slopes are 2-18°. Soil textures are medium sand. Stands of this association form an intermittent to continuous canopy with 40-86% cover at 0.5-1 m. This vegetation is dominated by Ammophila arenaria and Baccharis pilularis. Gnaphalium sp., Sonchus sp., Carpobrotus edulis, Vulpia sp., Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus ursinus, and a variety of other herbaceous species may contribute to minor cover. The herbaceous perennial Cardionema ramosissimum occurs in virtually all stands at low cover.

Geographic Range: This association is only known from the Point Reyes National Seashore. Information about its global characteristics is not available without additional inventory. It is suspected that this association is representative of many of the non-native stands of Ammophila arenaria up and down the Pacific Coast of North America. Ammophila arenaria has been planted and colonized most dune systems in coastal California. Cardionema ramosissimum is a common dune associate from Baja California to Washington.
