Type Concept: This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at low elevations on 4° to 24° slopes with north- to northwest-facing slopes. Soil textures range from moderately coarse sandy loam to moderately fine sandy clay loam. Stands on Point Reyes were affected by the 1995 Mount Vision fire and have young individuals of Ceanothus thyrsiflorus and resprouts of Baccharis pilularis. Stands of this shrubland form an open to continuous herb layer, an intermittent to continuous shrub layer 1-2 m tall, and sometimes and open tree layer 5-10 m tall. It is dominated by Baccharis pilularis and Ceanothus thyrsiflorus. Toxicodendron diversilobum is usually present, and a variety of other species found in this association may include Bromus hordeaceus, Bromus carinatus, Chlorogalum pomeridianum, Clinopodium douglasii, Sanicula crassicaulis, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Frangula californica, Rubus ursinus or Rubus parviflorus, and Marah fabaceus. This association is frequently found adjacent to ~Baccharis pilularis - Toxicodendron diversilobum Shrubland (CEGL003197)$$.

Floristics: Stands of this shrubland form an open to continuous herb layer, an intermittent to continuous shrub layer 1-2 m tall, and sometimes and open tree layer 5-10 m tall. It is dominated by Baccharis pilularis and Ceanothus thyrsiflorus. Toxicodendron diversilobum is usually present, and a variety of other species found in this association may include Bromus hordeaceus, Bromus carinatus, Chlorogalum pomeridianum, Clinopodium douglasii (= Satureja douglasii), Sanicula crassicaulis, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Rubus ursinus or Rubus parviflorus, and Marah fabaceus.

Dynamics:  Stands on Point Reyes were affected by the 1995 Mount Vision fire and have young individuals of Ceanothus thyrsiflorus and resprouts of Baccharis pilularis.
