The association occurs at the lower margin of the alpine zone on moderately steep south-facing slopes. Elevation ranges from 3110 to 3125 m (10,190-10,250 feet). Substrate parent materials are of volcanic origin. Festuca idahoensis dominates the relatively sparse, low-growing vegetation. Eriogonum caespitosum is codominant. Agoseris glauca, Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, Eriogonum ovalifolium, Ivesia gordonii, and Lupinus argenteus are present to common.
