Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: New Jersey Muhly - Brown Beaksedge Marsh

Colloquial Name: Pine Barrens Coastal Plain Muhly Pondshore

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This seasonally flooded wetland occurs on the North Atlantic Coastal Plain of New Jersey in topographically defined basins. The dominant species are Muhlenbergia torreyana, Rhynchospora fusca, Cladium mariscoides, and Sphagnum spp. Other associates include Amphicarpum purshii, Andropogon glomeratus, Bartonia paniculata, Carex striata var. brevis, Eriocaulon aquaticum, Hypericum canadense, Juncus canadensis, Lachnanthes caroliana, Lobelia canbyi, Panicum verrucosum, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Panicum rigidulum var. rigidulum, Panicum virgatum, Rhexia virginica, Schizachyrium scoparium, Scleria reticularis, and Triadenum virginicum. This vegetation occurs on the relatively higher, outer margin of the basin. The substrate is a thin organic horizon overtopping deep sand. This community is fire-dependent.

Environmental Description:  These seasonally flooded wetland depressions or intermittent ponds occur in acidic sands of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The dominance of fire-tolerant Muhlenbergia torreyana may indicate that this community is a sere that occurs during periods of drought and high fire frequency in ecosystems of the Pine Barrens.

Geographic Range: This Atlantic Coastal Plain pondshore community commonly occurs only in New Jersey.
