A3488 Sagittaria latifolia - Sagittaria cuneata - Leersia oryzoides Great Plains Marsh Alliance

Type Concept Sentence: In this alliance, Sagittaria latifolia and Sagittaria cuneata is dominant or abundant but sometimes contains Bacopa rotundifolia, Heteranthera limosa, Leersia oryzoides, Sagittaria longiloba, or (in the north) Hippuris vulgaris. This alliance is found in the southern and probably northern Great Plains on sites flooded for most or all of the growing season.

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Broadleaf Arrowhead - Arumleaf Arrowhead - Rice Cutgrass Great Plains Marsh Alliance

Colloquial Name: Great Plains Arrowhead - Rice Cutgrass Marsh

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: Stands of this alliance are dominated by short to medium-tall emergent forbs, especially Sagittaria latifolia and Sagittaria cuneata. Some stands may be dominated by Bacopa rotundifolia, Leersia oryzoides, Heteranthera limosa, Sagittaria longiloba, or (in the north) Hippuris vulgaris. Where water is deeper, submergent aquatic species such as Ceratophyllum spp., Myriophyllum spp., or Potamogeton spp. can be abundant beneath the emergent forbs. Sites are typically flooded for most or all of the growing season except during prolonged droughts. It is found widely scattered through the Great Plains.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Emergent forb-dominated wetland stands through most of the eastern Great Plains and parts of the tallgrass prairie, usually dominated by Sagittaria latifolia and Sagittaria cuneata but sometimes by other low to medium emergent forbs with Sagittaria spp. as an associate.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: There is little information about this alliance or most of its component associations. It was created based on similar environmental characteristics of the component associations and the abundance of Sagittaria latifolia and/or Sagittaria cuneata. Further work should be done to flesh out the component associations and how well this alliance holds together. One association (CEGL002280) is attributed to southern Canada, while the other two are attributed to the southern Great Plains. Should these be in the same alliance, presumably with other undocumented occurrences between them, or split into a Northern Great Plains vs. Southern Great Plains? ~Sagittaria latifolia - Leersia oryzoides Marsh (CEGL005240)$$, which is in ~Eastern North American Freshwater Marsh Group (G125)$$, has been attributed to South Dakota and possibly Montana, which are west of most of its range. Possibly the Great Plains portion of CEGL005240 should be split off and placed in this Great Plains alliance.

Physiognomy and Structure: Stands in this alliance have sparse to dense cover by emergent forbs. Where water is deeper, submergent species can be abundant beneath the emergent forbs.

Floristics: Sagittaria latifolia and Sagittaria cuneata are dominant or common in most stands. Some stands may be dominated by Bacopa rotundifolia, Heteranthera limosa, Leersia oryzoides, Sagittaria longiloba, or (in the north) Hippuris vulgaris. Where water is deeper, submergent aquatic species such as Ceratophyllum spp., Myriophyllum spp., or Potamogeton spp. can be abundant beneath the emergent forbs.

Dynamics:  Water is present for most or all of the growing season. This alliance cannot persist without flooding for most of the growing season.

Environmental Description:  This alliance is found in ponds which have water year-round, except in extended droughts. This includes interdunal swales along major streams and in depressional features in upland plains (playas). Soils are dense, poorly drained clays (Hoagland 1997, 2000, Lauver et al. 1999).

Geographic Range: This alliance is found in the southern Great Plains and southern Manitoba.
