G664 Warm Pacific Coastal Beach & Dune Group
Type Concept Sentence: Vegetated coastal sand dunes, dominated by often monotypic cultures of Abronia maritima, Ambrosia chamissonis, Cakile maritima, Coreopsis gigantea, and/or Lupinus arboreus. These dunes occur from Point Conception, California, south into Mexico.
Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Warm Pacific Coastal Beach & Dune Group
Colloquial Name: Warm Pacific Coastal Beach & Dune
Hierarchy Level: Group
Type Concept: These vegetated coastal sand dunes are dominated by Abronia maritima, Ambrosia chamissonis, Cakile maritima, Coreopsis gigantea, and/or Lupinus arboreus, often as monotypic mats. These dunes occur from Point Conception, California, south into Mexico. Stands of introduced species can be present, such as Carpobrotus chilensis and Ehrharta calycina.
Diagnostic Characteristics: Shifting sand dune substrates adjacent to ocean with at least 10% vascular plant cover such as Coreopsis gigantea.
Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available
Classification Comments: Little detailed vegetation studies are available from southern dunes. When stands of invasive non-native species completely dominate the area, the vegetation belongs to ~North Pacific Maritime Coastal Ruderal Dune Group (G647)$$ in ~North Pacific Coastal Ruderal Grassland & Shrubland Macrogroup (M511)$$.

note: No Data Available
Physiognomy and Structure: Low perennial forb, mostly rhizomatous vegetation, <1 m in height.
Floristics: Coreopsis gigantea with other coastal species, such as Abronia maritima, Ambrosia chamissonis, Cakile maritima, and Lupinus arboreus.
Dynamics: Native dune plant species have large seeds and are adapted to sand burial. Germination and emergence stages of beach and dune plants are particularly influenced by sand burial. Greater seed size allows them to emerge from greater depths. Seeds not buried do not geminated as readily (Pickart and Barbour 2007).
Environmental Description: This group occurs on shifting, loose deep sands exposed to oceanic salt spray.
Geographic Range: This group is found on coastal beaches and sand dunes from Point Conception, California, south into Mexico. Southern extent is unknown.
Nations: MX,US
States/Provinces: CA, MXBCN
