CEGL004625 Pinus elliottii - Taxodium ascendens / Lyonia lucida / Woodwardia virginica - Sphagnum spp. Swamp Woodland

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Slash Pine - Pond-cypress / Shining Fetterbush / Virginia Chainfern - Peatmoss species Swamp Woodland

Colloquial Name: Slash Pine - Pond-cypress Basin Swamp Woodland

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This association has been documented from Kings Bay, a large peat-filled basin swamp that exists on a Pleistocene barrier island in southeast Georgia. It may also exist in similar nearby environments such as the Okefenokee Swamp. Typical trees of this woodland community are stunted and include Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, Taxodium ascendens, Gordonia lasianthus, Nyssa biflora, and Magnolia virginiana. The shrub layer can be open to dense and is composed of Lyonia lucida, Ilex glabra, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex myrtifolia, Itea virginica, Morella cerifera, and Persea palustris. Smilax laurifolia is abundant, often covering trees and shrubs. Woodwardia virginica is common throughout the community. Other herb layer species include Sarracenia minor and Lachnanthes caroliana. Mats of Sphagnum spp. often cover the saturated ground layer.

Classification Comments: This association may grade up to ~Pinus serotina / Lyonia lucida - Ilex glabra - (Cyrilla racemiflora) Wet Shrubland (CEGL003846)$$. Throughout this association (CEGL004625), small pools or openings exist where ~Pinus elliottii / Lyonia lucida / Sarracenia minor var. okefenokeensis - Nymphaea odorata - Sphagnum spp. Wooded Wet Meadow (CEGL004230)$$ is present. Also, CEGL004625 may grade down into large patches of CEGL004230 in the same basin.

Floristics: Trees are stunted (10-15 m in height) and include Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, Taxodium ascendens, Gordonia lasianthus, Nyssa biflora, and Magnolia virginiana. The shrub layer can be open to dense and is composed of Lyonia lucida, Ilex glabra, Clethra alnifolia, Ilex myrtifolia, Itea virginica, Morella cerifera, and Persea palustris. Smilax laurifolia and Smilax walteri are common vines. Herb layer species include Woodwardia virginica, Sarracenia minor (= var. minor), and Lachnanthes caroliana. Mats of Sphagnum spp. cover the ground layer. Small permanently flooded depressions may exist in some parts of this community. In these depressional areas, the canopy becomes more open and species such as Sarracenia minor var. okefenokeensis, Nymphaea odorata, Peltandra sagittifolia, and Utricularia spp. become more important.

Dynamics:  Fire may be an important part of maintaining this association, and may spread from adjacent pine-dominated ecosystems. In places where severe fires have burned into the sphagnum substrates, ~Pinus elliottii var. elliottii / Lyonia lucida / Sarracenia minor var. okefenokeensis - Nymphaea odorata - Sphagnum spp. Wooded Wet Meadow (CEGL004230)$$ may be present.

Environmental Description:  This association exists in peat-filled nonriverine basin swamps with saturated substrates. This community seems to be nutrient-poor as evidenced by the stunted trees scattered throughout.

Geographic Range: This association is known from nonriverine basin swamps in southeast Georgia. It is possible in adjacent Florida.
