Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Ferriss'' Horsetail Marsh
Colloquial Name: No Data Available
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This horsetail herbaceous association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It occurs throughout Grand Canyon National Park along the Colorado River corridor at 375 to 950 m (1200-3100 feet) elevation, immediately along the riverbank, on sandbars, and in backwater coves. It occurs in saturated or inundated sand. This herbaceous association typically occurs immediately adjacent to riparian shrublands, and scattered shrubs occasionally punctuate some stands. Baccharis emoryi, Salix exigua, Baccharis salicifolia, and Pluchea sericea infrequently occur. The fern ally Equisetum x ferrissii characterizes and dominates this community and often forms small monocultural stands. Scattered graminoids occur intermixed in some stands, although graminoid composition varies considerably. Cynodon dactylon, Andropogon gerardii, and Phragmites australis can all occur. Other species such as Polypogon monspeliensis, Juncus articulatus, Juncus torreyi, and Agrostis stolonifera infrequently occur. Typha domingensis can also be codominant in some stands. Forb cover is usually fairly sparse, and species such as Pseudognaphalium stramineum, Melilotus officinalis, and Conyza canadensis are among the more frequent components of the forb layer.
