Sites occur along streams in foothills and mountain canyons where substrates are typically gravelly to sandy alluvium. The vegetation is characterized by the codominance of Platanus wrightii and Quercus oblongifolia in the tree canopy. Juglans major or Quercus emoryi may also be present in the tree canopy. The shrub layer is sparse to moderately dense. Associated species include Baccharis sarothroides, Brickellia spp., Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Dasylirion wheeleri, Erythrina flabelliformis, Gossypium thurberi, Lycium spp., Mimosa aculeaticarpa var. biuncifera, and Rhus trilobata. The herbaceous layer is sparse to moderately dense and typically dominated by graminoids such as Bouteloua curtipendula and Muhlenbergia rigens, but numerous forbs and other grasses are may be present.
