CEGL005326 Juglans major - Prosopis velutina Flooded Forest

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Arizona Walnut - Velvet Mesquite Flooded Forest

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This riparian tall shrubland/woodland occurs in southern Arizona and likely northern Mexico at elevations below 1200 m (3930 feet). Stands are found on gentle slopes along drainages and in floodplains on valley floors. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense to dense tall-shrub/tree canopy codominated by Juglans major and Prosopis velutina. Other tree species such as Celtis laevigata var. reticulata may be present but do not codominate. Vines such as Vitis arizonica may have significant cover. Scattered shrubs such as Baccharis spp. and Hymenoclea monogyra may be present, but generally at low cover, and may or may not be dense enough to form strata. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse because of the dense tree canopy and is usually dominated by a mixture of grasses and forbs. The native annual forb Amaranthus palmeri may be present but does not codominate the herbaceous layer. Other herbaceous species reported include Bidens leptocephala and Boerhavia coccinea. If present, cover of Eragrostis lehmanniana is relatively low with less than 25% cover and less than one-third total perennial graminoid cover.

Classification Comments: This riparian tall shrubland/woodland is codominated by Juglans major and Prosopis velutina. It was placed in ~Juglans major - Juglans microcarpa Riparian Forest Alliance (A0957)$$ as a best fit despite its being a shrubland/woodland. There is also a USNVC placeholder, ~Juglans major Flooded Forest (CEGL001102)$$, that is similar; this stand could be classified to it except for the codominance of Prosopis velutina, which is distinctive enough to propose a new association. This is based on one transect and several observations along Arivaca Creek at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this association.
