It is characterized by a dominance of Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber in the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer has no characteristic species. The emergent tree layer may include infrequent Quercus agrifolia, Quercus wislizeni, Juglans californica, Platanus racemosa, Pinus sabiniana, and Umbellularia californica.
