CEGL005957 Juglans major / Forestiera pubescens Flooded Forest
Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available
Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Arizona Walnut / Stretchberry Flooded Forest
Colloquial Name: No Data Available
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This mature riparian forest association is known only from the San Francisco River in southwestern New Mexico, although it probably occurs elsewhere in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. Preliminary data indicate that sites are on upper terraces at the edge of lowland valley floodplains at elevations from 1660 to 1650 m (4800-5370 feet). Soils are deep, well-drained loams that are relatively dry (Fluventic Ustochrepts and Typic Ustifluvents). Juglans major forms a moderately open canopy (35-50% cover); Acer negundo and Celtis laevigata var. reticulata may be present in the canopy but are poorly represented. The shrub layer is strongly dominated by Forestiera pubescens var. pubescens, with a scattering of other shrubs, including Rhus trilobata and Brickellia californica. The herbaceous layer is low in diversity, with 17 species recorded for the type, and often dominated by annual grasses such as Bromus tectorum and Hordeum pusillum. Perennial species such as Elymus glaucus and Marrubium vulgare may be well-represented to abundant.
