Type Concept: This early-seral forest type has been described from southern Idaho and western Wyoming, where it grows on slopes with northerly to easterly aspects from 1980-2600 m (6500-8500 feet) elevation. Pinus contorta var. latifolia dominates the overstory or codominates with Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca or Populus tremuloides; older stands contain Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa in the overstory. Paxistima myrsinites often dominates the undergrowth, and Osmorhiza berteroi or Osmorhiza depauperata (or both) are common and may codominate with Paxistima myrsinites. Other common species are Eucephalus engelmannii, Silene menziesii, Thalictrum fendleri, Viola adunca, and Aquilegia coerulea.
