Type Concept: This community occurs in the driest and hottest part of central Washington. It is an open shrubland community with a sparse and species-poor herbaceous layer. Grayia spinosa is often the only shrub, although it can be codominant with Artemisia tridentata on disturbed and transitional sites. Poa secunda is the dominant grass (20-40% cover typically) and frequently is the only perennial grass. Forb diversity is low. Least disturbed sites have a soil moss and lichen crust and few annuals. Disturbed sites have little or no moss/lichen cover and an abundance of exotic annuals such as Bromus tectorum.
