Type Concept: This association occurs naturally only in a few scattered locations in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California. Washingtonia filifera has been planted in many locations as an ornamental. The association is characterized by groves of Washingtonia filifera, often with greater than 50% cover, and up to 12 m in height. Occasionally other desert trees may occur, such as Acacia greggii or Platanus racemosa. Common herbaceous associates include Cynodon dactylon, Ambrosia tenuifolia, Penstemon spp., and Sphaeralcea spp. Szaro (1989) reported large numbers of Washingtonia filifera seedlings in the two groves he sampled, indicating good regeneration of Washingtonia.
