CEGL003462 Distichlis spicata - Frankenia salina - Jaumea carnosa Salt Marsh
Type Concept Sentence: This association is dominated by Distichlis spicata, Frankenia salina, and Jaumea carnosa forming a continuous herb layer. It is currently known from the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Channel Islands, but is likely to occur throughout coastal California.
Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Saltgrass - Alkali Sea-heath - Marsh Jaumea Salt Marsh
Colloquial Name: No Data Available
Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This association is currently known from the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Channel Islands of California. Information about its global characteristics is not available without additional inventory. Similar tidal brackish marshes with Distichlis spicata occur from Humboldt County to Monterey County, California. It is likely that this association ranges throughout this area. Similar stands of tidal wetland Distichlis spicata occur at Suisun Marsh, Solano County, California, and in San Francisco Bay. All stands occupy brackish estuarine environments. At Point Reyes, this association is dominated by Distichlis spicata, Frankenia salina, and Jaumea carnosa forming a continuous herb layer of 90-99% cover at 0-25 cm tall and 1-10% cover at 25-50 cm tall. Triglochin concinna and Triglochin maritima, Grindelia stricta, and Limonium californicum are also commonly found in this association. This association is often adjacent to Salicornia associations.
Diagnostic Characteristics: No Data Available
Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available
Classification Comments: In Suisun Marsh, very similar if not identical vegetation was called Distichlis spicata - Triglochin maritima association. It does not have as high a constancy of Frankenia as the Point Reyes association but is very similar in most other respects, including the commonness of Jaumea carnosa, Triglochin maritima, Glaux maritima, and Limonium californicum.
