Type Concept: This association is an open pine woodland adapted to cold winter conditions. Stands occur on the Fort Rock Ranger District of Central Oregon''s Deschutes National Forest, only within the lodgepole pine pumice zone created by the ash from Mount Mazama. Sites are documented at elevations of 1460-1500 m (4800-4900 feet) on gentle slopes (0-8%) with variable aspects. Soils are of rhyolite pumice with loamy coarse sand. Pinus contorta dominates the vegetation with 5-30% cover. Artemisia tridentata and Purshia tridentata occur with 3-20% and 0-7% cover, respectively. Herbaceous cover is composed of Elymus elymoides (3-10%) along with Carex rossii (trace-20%) and Eriogonum umbellatum (trace-10%).
