Type Concept: This association is an open pine woodland adapted to cold winter conditions. Sites are documented at elevations of 1460-1500 m (4800-4900 feet) on gentle slopes (0-8%) with variable aspects. Soils are of rhyolite pumice with loamy coarse sand. Pinus contorta dominates the vegetation with 5-30% cover. Artemisia tridentata and Purshia tridentata occur with 3-20% and 0-7% cover, respectively. Herbaceous cover is composed of Elymus elymoides (3-10%) along with Carex rossii (trace-20%) and Eriogonum umbellatum (trace-10%).
