CEGL003182 Artemisia pycnocephala - Cardionema ramosissimum Shrubland

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Beach Wormwood - Sandcarpet Shrubland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Other stands of Artemisia pycnocephala-dominated coastal dune vegetation occur from Humboldt County to at least Monterey County in California. Stands of this association are found on sandy substrates along beaches and in dune fields. Slopes are gentle and aspects are generally northwest. Stands are currently small, usually less than 2 acres in size. They occupy dune slopes and ridges most commonly along North Beach on the Point Reyes Peninsula. The non-native invasive species Ammophila arenaria and Carpobrotus edulis are threatening to invade many stands of this association. This short-shrub association is dominated by Artemisia pycnocephala which consistently contributes about 20% cover to the subshrub canopy. Carpobrotus edulis (exotic) dominates the herbaceous layer, while Cardionema ramosissimum is present at lower cover. Emergent individuals of Ericameria ericoides up to 1 m in height usually contribute minor cover. Other common subshrub associates may include Lotus scoparius, Eriogonum latifolium, Grindelia stricta var. stricta, and/or Grindelia stricta var. platyphylla.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: Further data are needed on distribution and composition throughout its range. Previously, it was considered a phase of ~Abronia latifolia - Ambrosia chamissonis Dune Grassland Alliance (A1614)$$ (Sawyer and Keeler-Wolf 1995, Pickart and Sawyer 1999). However, the general absence of Ambrosia chamissonis from many stands in the Point Reyes/Golden Gate mapping area suggests that this alliance and association should be segregated.
