Soils may be clay, clay loam, silt or silt loam, but most sampled plots were located on sandy loam. Adenostoma fasciculatum and Ceanothus cuneatus codominate. Other shrubs can be present and include Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber and Arctostaphylos pungens. A variety of native and non-native herbs occupy the understory, such as Marah fabaceus, Aira caryophyllea, Hypochaeris glabra, Bromus rubens, and Vulpia myuros.
