Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: (Chalky Bluestem, Purple Bluestem) - Fascicled Beaksedge - Maryland Meadowbeauty Wet Meadow

Colloquial Name: Florida Chalky Bluestem Prairie

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This community occurs in seasonally flooded, short hydroperiod situations in depressional wetlands. At Paynes Prairie (a 6000-hectare basin in the Florida peninsula), this community has the shortest hydroperiod of the various graminoid-dominated communities. It is dominated by various mixtures of Andropogon capillipes, Andropogon glaucopsis, Andropogon glomeratus var. hirsutior, Andropogon virginicus, Rhynchospora fascicularis var. fascicularis, Rhynchospora microcarpa, Juncus marginatus, Sesbania vesicaria, and Rhexia mariana. Other characteristic species are Eupatorium capillifolium, Panicum hemitomon, Eupatorium mohrii, Ludwigia suffruticosa, Ludwigia microcarpa, Hibiscus grandiflorus, Rhynchospora caduca, Euthamia caroliniana, Fimbristylis sp., Hydrocotyle spp., Ptilimnium capillaceum, Boehmeria cylindrica, Paspalum notatum, and Paspalum urvillei.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: Examples are known from Paynes Prairie State Preserve, Alachua County, Florida (south of Gainesville), and from the Ocala National Forest. This community is near the conceptual boundary of several hydrologic descriptors, and, in addition, the hydrologic expression may vary from year to year, confounding hydrologic placement.

Scattered Pinus elliottii may be present. Related examples on the Ocala National Forest (Farles Prairie, Chain o'' Lakes) contain Andropogon capillipes, Andropogon glaucopsis, Rhexia mariana, Eupatorium capillifolium, Hypericum brachyphyllum, Hypericum fasciculatum, Hypericum myrtifolium, Xyris elliottii, Xyris sp., Panicum hemitomon, Panicum verrucosum, Amphicarpum muehlenbergianum, Coelorachis tuberculosa, Lachnanthes caroliana, Rhynchospora sp., and Lycopodiella appressa.
