Type Concept: This association occurs in the coastal mountains of Oregon and possibly northern California. Stands occur at elevations of 540-1115 m (1780-3660 feet) on all aspects and slopes, but are commonly associated with flat sites at the upper third of slopes. These forests are characterized by a very shrubby understory. Pseudotsuga menziesii and Chrysolepis chrysophylla dominate the upper canopy layer. Important understory trees are Pseudotsuga menziesii and Notholithocarpus densiflorus (10%). Other important plants include Rhododendron macrophyllum, Mahonia nervosa, and Gaultheria shallon.

Classification Comments: This is a broadly defined association which includes a number of locally defined types. It is possible that this association needs to be split into two or three types. Regional analysis is necessary to determine if reclassification is warranted. For now, this association includes the Pseudotsuga menziesii / Gaultheria shallon - Rhododendron macrophyllum community described by Atzet et al. (1996), as well as the following associations from Jimerson et al. (1995): Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla - Lithocarpus densiflorus, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla - Lithocarpus densiflorus / Berberis nervosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla / Xerophyllum tenax, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla / Rhododendron macrophyllum - Berberis nervosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla / Rhododendron macrophyllum - Gaultheria shallon, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla / Rhododendron macrophyllum - Quercus sadleriana - Gaultheria shallon, Pseudotsuga menziesii - Castanopsis chrysophylla / Rhododendron macrophyllum - Quercus sadleriana / Xerophyllum tenax.

Pseudotsuga menziesii and Chrysolepis chrysophylla (= Castanopsis chrysophylla) dominate the upper canopy layer with 42-66% and 9-33% cover, respectively. Important understory trees are Pseudotsuga menziesii (1-20%) and Notholithocarpus densiflorus (= Lithocarpus densiflorus) (10%). Other important plants include Rhododendron macrophyllum (41%), Mahonia nervosa (= var. nervosa) (4-6%), and Gaultheria shallon (0-61%). Moss cover is can be as high as 22%.
