CEGL002643 Populus angustifolia Sand Dune Riparian Forest

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Narrowleaf Cottonwood Sand Dune Riparian Forest

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This plant association consists of stands of Populus angustifolia atop sand dunes in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado at 2300 m elevation. Stands occur in an unusual environmental setting on braided, sandy streams adjacent to wind-driven, actively moving sand dunes. Populus angustifolia occurs on ridges of the sand dunes and increases in age with distance from the active stream channel. Stands consist of mature and young cottonwoods with no shrub or herbaceous plants in the understory.

Diagnostic Characteristics: No Data Available

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This community is known from one large and nearly pristine stand on Sand Creek in south-central Colorado. The physical environment is unique in the Southern Rocky Mountains (Ecoregion 20). Another stand, possibly of the same type, occurs in the greater valley, but is not associated with sand dunes. The "community" is comprised mainly of a single plant species, Populus angustifolia.
