Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This association occurs at low elevations in depressions, on slopes, surrounding lakes or ponds, or associated with flat floodplains. Water tables are often at or near the surface for much of the growing season, and organic decomposition is slow. The substrate is moderately quaking to firm peat mats. Well-developed hummocks are common. Ledum groenlandicum and/or Kalmia microphylla form a dense, short-shrub layer. Other dwarf-shrubs frequently present are Vaccinium oxycoccos and Gaultheria shallon. A variety of herbaceous species may occur, the most frequent are usually Drosera rotundifolia and Comarum palustre. Sphagnum spp. are the dominant feature in the spaces among vascular plants. This association occurs on the Olympic Peninsula and the northern Puget Lowland.
