Characteristic species include mostly annual herbs, such as Cakile edentula ssp. harperi, Chamaesyce polygonifolia, Chamaesyce bombensis, Sesuvium portulacastrum, Salsola kali ssp. kali, and Amaranthus pumilus. On Cumberland Island National Seashore in southeastern Georgia, perennials such as Croton punctatus and Uniola paniculata also can be important.
