In some parts of its range, this type can occur as a fringing shrubland, zonal between Zizania aquatica tidal marshes and tidal cypress - gum forests. Less commonly it occupies large patches in freshwater marshes. Stands are dominated by Alnus serrulata. In addition, Rosa palustris may be present, and Zizania aquatica and/or Zizaniopsis miliacea are abundant herbs.
