Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Purple Sage Desert Wash Shrubland

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: The association is found at mid to upper elevations in arroyos and drainage channels in the Mojave Desert in California. Vegetation is characterized by an open to moderately dense, often patchy shrub canopy (13-29% cover) dominated or codominated by Salvia dorrii with characteristic shrubs Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Salazaria mexicana, and Thamnosma montana present to codominant. Prunus fasciculata is often present with moderately high cover. Many other shrubs are frequently present. Occasional emergent Pinus monophylla or Yucca brevifolia trees are sometimes present. The herbaceous layer is sparse and composed of native grasses and forbs, including Achnatherum speciosum, Adenophyllum cooperi, Castilleja angustifolia, Eriogonum inflatum, Heliomeris multiflora, Mirabilis pumila, Oenothera caespitosa, Penstemon palmeri, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and Tridens muticus, and exotic annuals include Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. Stands occur in lower canyons, upper arroyos and drainage channels at 1180-1570 m elevation. Sites are gentle to moderate slopes on variable aspects. Soils are sands or sandy loams, with high cover of gravel, cobble, and stone and derived from a variety of substrates.

Occasional emergent Pinus monophylla or Yucca brevifolia trees are sometimes present (Evens et al. 2014). The herbaceous layer is sparse, ranging from 2 to 12% cover. Commonly associated native grasses and forbs include Achnatherum speciosum, Adenophyllum cooperi, Castilleja angustifolia, Eriogonum inflatum, Heliomeris multiflora, Mirabilis pumila, Oenothera caespitosa, Penstemon palmeri, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and Tridens muticus, and exotic annuals include Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014).

Environmental Description:  The association is found at mid to upper elevations in the Mojave Desert in California. It occurs in lower canyons, upper arroyos and drainage channels at 1180-1570 m elevation (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014). Sites are gentle to moderate slopes (to 11°) on variable aspects. Soils are sands or sandy loams, with high cover (80%) of gravel, cobble, and stone (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014). Soils are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium, gneiss, limestone, rhyolite, and sandstone (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014).

Geographic Range: The association is found at mid to upper elevations in arroyos and drainage channels in the Mojave Desert and was sampled in Mojave National Preserve in California.
