CEGL005743 Chilopsis linearis / Ericameria paniculata Desert Wash Scrub

Type Concept Sentence: No Data Available

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Desert-willow / Mojave Rabbitbrush Desert Wash Scrub

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This association occurs along intermittently flooded drainages in the Mojave Desert in California and southern Nevada. Chilopsis linearis is dominant and characteristic in the sparse to open tree overstory (2-20% cover). The sparse to open shrub layer is variable, ranging from 3 to 20% cover, and is dominated by Ericameria paniculata with 2-10% cover. A variety of other wash-associated shrubs may be present. Herb cover is also variable, ranging from 1 to 15% cover, and commonly includes Cucurbita palmata, Penstemon palmeri, Physalis hederifolia, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Stephanomeria pauciflora, and introduced herbs Bromus rubens, Erodium cicutarium, and Schismus spp. Stands are found at mid to upper elevations along intermittently flooded channel beds within lower canyons and washes along bajadas, and occasionally on slope/summit canyon drainages. Sites occur on gentle to moderate slopes (to 4°) between 560 and 1550 m elevation often with southerly aspects. Soils are rapidly drained medium to fine sand derived from alluvium from a variety of substrates such as alkali-granite, granodiorite, limestone, and sandstone. Over 80% of the ground surface is covered with gravel, cobble, and fine sediment.

The sparse to open shrub layer is variable, ranging from 3 to 20% cover, and is dominated by Ericameria paniculata with 2-10% cover (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014). A variety of other wash-associated shrubs may be present, including Acacia greggii, Ambrosia eriocentra, Brickellia incana, Encelia virginensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Hymenoclea salsola, Larrea tridentata, Prunus fasciculata, Salazaria mexicana, and Senna armata (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014). Herb cover is also variable, ranging from 1 to 15% cover, and commonly includes Cucurbita palmata, Penstemon palmeri, Physalis hederifolia, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and Stephanomeria pauciflora (Evens 2000, Evens et al. 2014). Introduced herbs Bromus rubens, Erodium cicutarium, and Schismus spp. are common on disturbed sites.
