Hierarchy Level: Association
Type Concept: This Douglas-fir - western hemlock forest of Alaska, Washington and Oregon has a canopy codominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii and Tsuga heterophylla. Thuja plicata and Abies amabilis occur in about half the sampled stands, and the former can be prominent. The shrub layer can be rather sparse to well-developed. Vaccinium alaskaense may be absent but can dominate the shrub layer. Mahonia nervosa is always present and often prominent. Gaultheria shallon and Vaccinium parvifolium are usually present. Acer circinatum is present and can be prominent. The herb layer is dominated by Xerophyllum tenax, which is always over 5% cover. Linnaea borealis and Chimaphila umbellata are frequent. This association occurs at mid elevations. Sites occupied are mid to upper slopes and ridgetops, have shallow rocky soils, and are moderately to very steep.
