Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Pacific Silver Fir - (Douglas-fir, Western Hemlock) / Pacific Rhododendron Forest

Colloquial Name: No Data Available

Hierarchy Level:  Association

Type Concept: This Pacific silver fir forest occurs in the east-central and especially northeastern Olympic Mountains of Washington. It is most abundant in western Oregon. The canopy is usually dominated or codominated by Tsuga heterophylla. Pseudotsuga menziesii and/or Abies amabilis usually codominate. Abies amabilis dominates or codominates tree regeneration and contributes over 10% total cover. The often dense tall-shrub layer is dominated or codominated by Rhododendron macrophyllum. Mahonia nervosa is usually present and occasionally codominates the a dwarf-shrub stratum. Vaccinium alaskaense is often present and sometimes prominent to codominant. Gaultheria shallon or Acer circinatum are occasionally prominent to codominant. The herb layer is typically sparse. Linnaea borealis is frequent and sometimes prominent. This association occurs at middle elevations. Sites have well-drained soils and occur on a variety of slopes. Many natural-origin stands occur on protected lands; however, non-protected stands are subject to logging and development.
