A3213 Quercus buckleyi - Quercus sinuata var. breviloba - Quercus laceyi Dry Forest & Woodland Alliance

Type Concept Sentence: This alliance includes woodland vegetation dominated or codominated by Quercus buckleyi, Fraxinus albicans, Quercus sinuata var. breviloba, Quercus laceyi, and Ulmus crassifolia occurring in dry landscape settings in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent regions of Texas and possibly Oklahoma.

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: Texas Red Oak - White Shin Oak - Lacey Oak Dry Forest & Woodland Alliance

Colloquial Name: Southern Plateau Dry Deciduous Oak Forest & Woodland

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: This alliance includes primarily deciduous woodland vegetation dominated or codominated by Quercus buckleyi, Fraxinus albicans, Quercus sinuata var. breviloba, Quercus laceyi, and Ulmus crassifolia occurring in dry landscape settings in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent regions of Texas and possibly Oklahoma. The understory may include Diospyros texana, Mahonia trifoliolata, Sophora secundiflora, and Opuntia engelmannii. Herbaceous cover may be high where individual trees are scattered forming an open canopy, or sparse within denser canopied mottes. Herbaceous composition resembles that of the surrounding uplands. Canopy cover may consist of scattered individual trees or groups of trees (mottes) interspersed with grasslands. This alliance occurs in dry landscape settings of more-or-less level uplands and mesatops. Fire, climate and edaphic factors are thought to play an important role in maintaining these woodlands.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Diagnostic criteria include a mostly deciduous canopy on more or less level uplands and mesas in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent regions of Texas and possibly Oklahoma.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This alliance is a placeholder for undescribed vegetation associations. More information is needed to flesh out detailed floristic, environment, and range. It is related to Edwards Plateau: Deciduous Oak / Evergreen Motte and Woodland, and Edwards Plateau: Oak / Hardwood Motte and Woodland (Elliott 2011). It is closely related to and shares many species with the other alliances in this group (G126). Differences between them are related to the dominance of those species and their growth form (broad-leaved subevergreen, needle-leaved evergreen, or deciduous).

Physiognomy and Structure: This alliance is a woodland with scattered individual trees or groups of trees (mottes) interspersed with grasslands.

Floristics: This alliance is characterized by Quercus buckleyi, and other deciduous trees such as Celtis laevigata, Fraxinus albicans (= Fraxinus texensis), Ulmus crassifolia, Quercus sinuata var. breviloba, and Quercus laceyi. Lesser amounts of evergreen trees such as Quercus fusiformis and Juniperus ashei may also be present. An open understory may contain Diospyros texana, Mahonia trifoliolata, Sophora secundiflora, and Opuntia engelmannii. Herbaceous cover may be high where individual trees are scattered forming an open canopy, or sparse within denser canopied mottes. Herbaceous composition resembles that of the surrounding uplands and may include Schizachyrium scoparium, Bothriochloa laguroides ssp. torreyana, Nassella leucotricha, Aristida purpurea, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Sorghastrum nutans, Bouteloua hirsuta var. pectinata, Bouteloua trifida, Bouteloua rigidiseta, Erioneuron pilosum, Hilaria belangeri, and many others.

Dynamics:  Fire, climate and edaphic factors are thought to play an important role in maintaining these woodlands.

Environmental Description:  This alliance occurs in dry landscape settings of more-or-less level uplands and mesatops.

Geographic Range: The distribution of this alliance is centered on the Edwards Plateau region of Texas and may range into adjacent regions of Texas and Oklahoma.
