A2018 Platanus occidentalis - Juglans major - Salix nigra Floodplain Woodland Alliance

Type Concept Sentence: These woodlands occur in central and western Texas on wet flats and high-energy rivershores; they are naturally or artificially disturbed and therefore maintain an open canopy. These stands are typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis. This vegetation may have Juglans major as a codominant, Platanus occidentalis as the dominant canopy with few other trees, and Juglans microcarpa as a shrub, or Salix nigra as a codominant.

Common (Translated Scientific) Name: American Sycamore - Arizona Walnut - Black Willow Floodplain Woodland Alliance

Colloquial Name: American Sycamore - Arizona Walnut Floodplain Woodland

Hierarchy Level:  Alliance

Type Concept: These woodlands occur in central and western Texas on wet flats and high-energy rivershores; they are naturally or artificially disturbed and therefore maintain an open canopy. These stands are typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis. This vegetation may have Juglans major as a codominant, Platanus occidentalis as the dominant canopy with few other trees, and Juglans microcarpa as a shrub, or Salix nigra as a codominant. Acer grandidentatum may be present, as well as Prunus serotina var. eximia. This alliance is best documented by association-level data in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent Chihuahuan Desert of Texas; its presence elsewhere remains speculative.

Diagnostic Characteristics: Platanus occidentalis, Juglans major woodland, occupying rocky wet flats and high-energy rivershores.

Rationale for Nominal Species or Physiognomic Features: No Data Available

Classification Comments: This vegetation is likely to be closely related to other riparian vegetation of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico. Once this vegetation is reviewed for alliance placement, we will have a better idea if the vegetation currently placed in this alliance may be better classified elsewhere or if other associations not currently under review belong here. There may also be undescribed associations representing this alliance.

Floristics: These stands are typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis. Other canopy components are variable. One association may have Juglans major as a codominant, another (e.g., in the Edwards Plateau of Texas) is typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis and few other trees, with Salix nigra as a codominant. Platanus occidentalis is always one of the dominant (and may be the only) trees. Juglans microcarpa is a typical and often abundant shrub, and Baccharis neglecta or Baccharis salicifolia are often present as well. Other typical species include Panicum virgatum and Schizachyrium scoparium. Other canopy trees include Acer grandidentatum and Prunus serotina var. eximia. In this type, herbs are patchy, but sometimes dense, and include Andropogon glomeratus var. pumilus, Panicum virgatum, Verbesina virginica, and Muhlenbergia lindheimeri.

Dynamics:  Stands of this alliance are naturally or artificially disturbed and therefore maintain an open canopy.

Environmental Description:  These woodlands occur on wet flats and high-energy rivershores, primarily in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent Chihuahuan Desert of Texas. Some Texas examples (e.g., ~Platanus occidentalis - (Salix nigra) / Juglans microcarpa - Baccharis salicifolia Floodplain Woodland (CEGL004930)$$) are described as "gallery woodlands" and occur along streams and rivers in arid areas of the Edwards Plateau and Stockton Plateau.

Geographic Range: These woodlands occur in central and western Texas on wet flats and high-energy rivershores.
